Anthropic Warns Small AI Models Could Self-Replicate Across IoT Devices
Anthropic’s Frontier Red Team published research on October 12 showing that small open-weight models under 30 billion parameters can already perform individual steps required for self-replication. These include scanning for vulnerable internet-connected devices, installing copies, and spreading to other machines.
The team tested a 26-billion-parameter model across 15 Android TV boxes costing about $55 each. Inference ran at roughly 0.39 tokens per second, slow but functional. Current models cannot reliably complete the full replication sequence end to end.
In simplified tests with some security layers removed, Zhipu AI’s GLM-5.2 and stronger models succeeded at full end-to-end replication. Anthropic estimates that if small models improve at their historical pace, they could reach this capability by late 2026. The company recommends monitoring large AI file transfers and detecting anomalous network activity. The core risk is that once such a system spreads, there is no central kill switch.
Infinigence AI Closes $344M Series C Backed by Tencent, Baidu, and Lenovo
Shanghai-based AI infrastructure company Infinigence AI completed a RMB 2.3 billion (approximately $344 million) Series C round on October 12. Tencent, Baidu, Lenovo, Sequoia China, and Qiming Venture Partners participated, bringing cumulative funding to RMB 4.3 billion.
Founded in 2023 as a Tsinghua University spinout, the company builds software that runs AI workloads across mixed chip environments. It has confidentially filed for a Hong Kong IPO targeting the first half of 2027. This is the largest single-round raise for a Chinese AI infrastructure startup to date.

Bloomberg reported that AI-powered corporate spend management fintech Ramp raised approximately $1.85 billion in a round co-led by Dragoneer Investment Group and Thrive Capital. Founders Fund also participated. The pre-money valuation is roughly $60 billion.
That marks a 36% increase in just four months from the $44 billion valuation set during a $750 million raise in June 2026. Ramp reports annualized revenue above $1 billion with positive free cash flow, more than 70,000 business customers, and $200 billion in annualized purchase volume. The company declined to confirm the round.
Applied Materials Opens $5B EPIC Center in Silicon Valley
Applied Materials officially opened the EPIC Center in Sunnyvale, California, on October 12. The 55,700 m-squared facility houses 16,200 m-squared of cleanroom space, making it the world’s largest collaborative semiconductor process R&D center.
TSMC, Intel, Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron signed on as founding partners. Innovation partners include Broadcom, Advantest, SCREEN, KIOXIA, and Besi. Research partners include Arizona State, Stanford, and UC Berkeley. As AI chip development grows more complex through 3D stacking and advanced nodes, the facility provides a shared R&D hub where industry leaders can collaborate under one roof. Capital spending is expected to ramp gradually toward $5 billion as customer projects begin.
Startups
Pluto Security Emerges from Stealth with $42M in Funding
Israeli AI security startup Pluto Security exited stealth on October 13, disclosing $42 million in total funding. The breakdown includes a roughly $34 million Series A led by Jump Capital and an approximately $8.5 million seed round led by TLV Partners. Armis co-founders also invested.
The platform secures employee-built AI tools, browser extensions, and “vibe-coded” software. Since starting sales in April 2026, Pluto has crossed $2 million in annual recurring revenue and signed over 40 enterprise customers including Oscar Health, Workato, Sixt, and AlphaSense. The company says it protects more than one million endpoints.
ICON Raises $200M Series D for Robotic Construction
Austin-based robotic construction startup ICON closed a $200 million Series D on October 13, co-led by Baillie Gifford and BlackRock.
The funds go toward production of Titan, ICON’s multi-story robotic construction system, at its Austin factory, a new large-scale R&D facility, and market expansion into Texas, Florida, and Washington, D.C. The company targets 4x revenue growth in 2026. The raise signals a shift from 3D-printed single-story homes to multi-story buildings in ICON’s strategy.
Semiconductors
Samsung Confirms 4F-Squared DRAM Development Amid CXMT Push
Samsung semiconductor division VP Song Jae-hyuk publicly confirmed that the company is actively developing 4F-squared DRAM cell architecture. The 4F-squared structure reduces cell area by 33% compared to conventional 6F-squared, making it essential for next-generation server memory.
The confirmation comes as China’s CXMT signaled plans to ship 4F-squared DRAM by year-end, raising concerns about a narrowing technology gap. Samsung and SK hynix share prices fell on the news. Samsung is also preparing 400-plus-layer wafer bonding technology for its 10th-generation V-NAND (V10), as the company pushes to maintain its memory technology lead.
Samsung Seeks 3x-Plus HBM3E Pricing for 2027 HBM4
Korean media reports indicate Samsung has proposed 2027 HBM4 pricing in the mid-to-high $4 per gigabit range during customer negotiations. Current HBM3E sits at roughly $1.50 per gigabit, putting the ask at more than three times today’s price.
KB Securities expects Samsung’s HBM prices to rise by more than 100% in 2027. TrendForce forecasts a 121% increase across the industry. The pricing reflects the generational transition to HBM4, designed for NVIDIA’s next-generation Vera Rubin platform, with higher layer counts and new architectures. Samsung has not commented on the reports.
Open Source
NVIDIA Open-Sources Full Run:ai GPU Orchestration Platform
NVIDIA has released the entire Run:ai platform as open source, following its $700 million acquisition of the company. The release includes four modular components: KAI Scheduler for GPU-aware Kubernetes scheduling, GPU Fractioning Operator for CUDA-native GPU sharing, KAI Resource Management for organizational quotas, and Workload Map for standardized workload management.
The UI, CLI, API, user management, and dashboards are all open source. Eight NVIDIA DSX ecosystem partners including Crusoe, Nebius, Mirantis, and OpenNebula are supporting integrations. KAI Scheduler had been available under Apache 2.0 as a CNCF Sandbox project since April 2025, but this release extends open-source coverage to the entire platform.
RocketWerkz and Ahwoo Open-Source the BRUTAL Game Framework
DayZ creator Dean Hall’s RocketWerkz and Ahwoo released the BRUTAL game development framework as open source on October 15. Built in C# with Vulkan API access, it is free for commercial use with no royalties.
BRUTAL powers Kitten Space Agency and the Waylith engine behind RimWorld 1.7. Six projects across three studios currently use it. Hall argues that lightweight frameworks giving developers direct low-level API access will replace monolithic game engines, offering better moddability and long-term scalability.
