Mistral Launches Voxtral 3 Voice Agent API

Mistral AI unveiled Voxtral 3 on October 20, a family of speech models bundled with a voice agent SDK. The stack covers transcription, real-time speech recognition, and text-to-speech in a single pipeline.

The 4-billion-parameter Voxtral Mini Transcribe 3 handles 50-plus languages. Batch transcription costs $0.0035 per minute, while the real-time model runs under 500ms latency at $0.008 per minute. The TTS model supports 35-plus languages, 50-plus dialects, zero-shot voice cloning, and automatic emotion and pacing adjustment.

The voice agent SDK is built on LiveKit and includes speaker diarization, function calling, and SIP integration. Deployment options span EU, US, and global API endpoints as well as private cloud installations.

Brazil Court Orders Meta to Treat Election Candidates Equally in AI Tools

Brazil’s top electoral court judge Marco Aurélio Bellizze ordered Meta to treat election candidates equally across its AI tools. The Lula campaign alleged that WhatsApp’s Meta AI refused to generate campaign images for Lula while allowing them for Bolsonaro.

The ruling requires Meta to apply identical criteria to both candidacies. Non-compliance carries a daily fine of 500,000 reais (roughly $98,000). The complaint also cited algorithmic reach suppression targeting Lula’s content.

This is one of the first cases where a court has directly enforced AI neutrality in elections. Coming ahead of the October 25 runoff, it sets an international precedent for holding AI platforms accountable for political fairness.

Big Tech

Big Tech AI Earnings Week Begins

Alphabet and Microsoft report quarterly earnings on October 28, followed by Amazon on October 29. Investors will be watching whether massive AI infrastructure spending is translating into revenue growth.

Combined Big Tech AI infrastructure investment is projected to reach $725 billion this year. Alphabet raised its annual capex guidance to $180-205 billion, Microsoft to $190 billion, and Amazon is holding at roughly $200 billion.

Last week’s Nasdaq dip reflected concerns about AI spending versus profitability. The key metric this earnings season will be how quickly cloud backlogs exceeding $2 trillion convert into billed revenue.

Samsung Foundry Unveils 8LPU+ Second-Gen 8nm Process

Samsung Foundry presented its 8LPU+ second-generation 8nm process at IEDM 2026. The node runs entirely on existing DUV lithography lines, eliminating the cost of EUV equipment.

Compared to the first-gen 8LPU, Samsung claims 12% higher performance, 15% lower power consumption, and 8% smaller logic area. ULL-SRAM and cHVT devices further reduce standby leakage. NVIDIA’s Drive Orin, already in mass production on Samsung’s 8nm node, provides an automotive track record.

The target markets are edge AI, automotive, and robotics chips. As demand grows for mature-node silicon that does not require cutting-edge fabrication, Samsung is betting on DUV cost competitiveness to expand its foundry share.

Firstwork Raises $15M Series A for AI Frontline Workforce Onboarding

Frontline workforce AI platform Firstwork closed a $15 million Series A led by Earlybird Venture Capital. Y Combinator, Deel Ventures, Legion VC, and SOMA Capital also participated, bringing total funding to $20 million.

Firstwork’s AI agents automate the gap between job offer acceptance and a worker’s first shift, a period marked by high dropout rates in frontline roles. Healthcare, logistics, and delivery companies with large workforces are the primary customers.

The round closed shortly after Firstwork won SIA’s Shark Tank-style innovation competition at CollaborationX in Dallas. Founded in 2024 by former Deliveroo strategy lead Vardhan Kapoor, the company has about 45 employees and is expanding across the US and Europe.

Mach9 Closes $34M Series A for AI-Powered Civil Engineering CAD

Civil engineering AI CAD startup Mach9 closed a $34 million Series A co-led by First Round Capital and Bessemer Venture Partners. Prudence and Quiet Capital also joined the round.

Founded in 2021 as Mach9 Robotics, the company pivoted from hardware to AI CAD software after concluding that hardware was not the bottleneck. Roughly 100 customers have used the platform across 2,500-plus projects, with the company claiming 10x faster drawing output and 80% cost reduction versus conventional workflows.

Civil engineering remains one of the slowest sectors to digitize. AI-driven design tools that address labor shortages and project delays are drawing increasing investor interest.

Node.js Patches Brotli Decoder RCE and Nine Other Vulnerabilities

Node.js shipped 10 security fixes on October 21. Four are rated HIGH. The most critical, CVE-2026-111497, is an out-of-bounds write in the bundled Brotli decoder that enables remote code execution.

A crafted compressed stream that declares a single block type and then switches blocks was not rejected by the decoder. Any code path that decompresses untrusted Brotli data is affected, including zlib.brotliDecompress and zlib.createBrotliDecompress.

Fixed versions are 22.23.4, 24.22.1, and 26.12.1. End-of-life lines (20.x and below) will not receive patches. Builds linking a system Brotli library also need the upstream fix.

curl Shifts Low and Medium Vulnerabilities to Public Handling

Starting October 26, the curl project handles LOW and MEDIUM severity vulnerabilities as public GitHub issues. Only HIGH and CRITICAL reports remain on the private HackerOne channel.

The driving factor is maintainer overload. The volume of vulnerability reports has pushed the core team close to capacity. Public handling lets outside contributors participate in triage and patching, distributing the workload.

The trade-off is earlier exposure of vulnerability details to potential attackers. curl also paused vulnerability intake entirely for July 2026, making this policy shift another signal that open source security maintenance is under strain.

Riff 1.0: Native Spotify Client for GNOME Desktop

Riff, a Rust and GTK4/libadwaita-based open source Spotify client, shipped its 1.0 release on Flathub. It uses librespot under the hood and requires a Spotify Premium account.

Features include a 10-band equalizer, MPRIS media key support, Secret Service credential storage, and a play queue manager. The project forked from Spot and has since developed independently.

Riff is MIT-licensed and explicitly states in its README that it does not accept AI-generated contributions. A known limitation is that some accounts may fail due to Spotify’s PlayPlay DRM.

Gaming

Skydance Merges WB Games and Paramount Games After $111B Acquisition

Paramount’s $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery closed on October 6, and the newly formed Skydance is now combining both companies’ gaming divisions. Tony Driscoll leads the unified games and experiences unit.

The merged entity brings together Avalanche Software (Hogwarts Legacy), NetherRealm (Mortal Kombat), Rocksteady (Batman Arkham), and TT Games (LEGO). The combined IP library spans Harry Potter, DC Universe, Star Trek, Mission: Impossible, and Game of Thrones.

A $6 billion-plus synergy target signals potential restructuring ahead. Active game development budgets and pipelines have not been finalized, leaving individual studio fates uncertain.

Steam Scream Fest V Halloween Sale Starts October 26

Valve’s annual Halloween-themed sale, Steam Scream Fest V, begins October 26 at 10:00 AM Pacific and runs through November 2. The dates were published in Valve’s official second-half 2026 events schedule.

The event features discounts centered on horror, survival, and dark fantasy titles. The developer discount registration deadline coincides with the sale’s launch.

Running since 2022, the fest overlaps this year with the Xbox Shocktober Sale (through November 5), giving players simultaneous Halloween deals on both PC and console.

Minecraft Switch 2 Launches October 27 with Vibrant Visuals

Mojang Studios is releasing the native Nintendo Switch 2 version of Minecraft on October 27. Enhanced lighting and shadow effects under the “Vibrant Visuals” setting are enabled by default.

The Nintendo-exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up pack also receives graphical upgrades. Existing Switch worlds can be transferred, and digital owners can claim the upgrade at no additional charge until January 2027.

Vibrant Visuals is disabled in split-screen mode. This is one of the first major third-party titles to take full advantage of Switch 2’s improved hardware.
