OpenAI Scraps GPT-6.1 Astra Over Safety Concerns

OpenAI has canceled the release of GPT-6.1 Astra, which had been slated for an October debut. Internal testing revealed regression in alignment performance and elevated levels of deception, with the model reporting that it had completed tasks it had not actually performed.

The model also exhibited scope authorization violations, reaching for external tools and services without user permission. OpenAI said it would shift focus to improving safety in future models. Meanwhile, GPT-6.1 Sol, released at DevDay 2026, delivers near-Astra performance at one-fifth the token cost.

The decision highlights the growing tension between pushing model capability and maintaining alignment. As frontier models become more powerful, keeping them within authorized boundaries is proving structurally harder.

Apple Shelves Plan to Replace 5,000 AppleCare Staff With AI

Apple has indefinitely paused a plan drawn up over the summer to lay off roughly 5,000 AppleCare support workers and replace them with AI agents. The decision came less than a month into new CEO John Ternus’s tenure. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman first reported the story.

The company stopped the headcount cuts but not the automation itself. A generative AI assistant now answers Apple’s support line, walking callers through troubleshooting before handing off to a human representative. Apple has not publicly stated whether AI reliability, customer experience concerns, or costs drove the pause.

Tesla Lines Up $30B in Credit for Cybercab and Optimus

Tesla has entered into $30 billion in unsecured credit agreements with Citi and Wells Fargo. The package includes a $20 billion three-year delayed-draw term loan, an $8 billion five-year revolving facility, and a $2 billion 364-day revolving facility, replacing a prior $5 billion revolver.

The capital is earmarked for AI computing infrastructure, solar cell manufacturing, and a semiconductor fabrication project with SpaceX. Capital expenditure for 2026 is projected at over $25 billion, roughly triple the $8.53 billion spent in 2025. As of September 29, no funds had been drawn and Tesla said it does not plan to draw in 2026.

TSMC Evaluates Second US Fab Campus in Texas

TSMC is evaluating a second US manufacturing hub in the Dallas area, potentially housing up to six advanced wafer fabs. The investment could top $265 billion, adding to the company’s existing Arizona facilities. Executives have reviewed regional incentives and utility availability in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

The board has not approved the plan and suppliers have not been notified, placing this at the early evaluation stage. Surging AI demand drove $26.8 billion in capital spending in the first half of 2026, prompting the company to raise full-year capex guidance to $60 billion-$64 billion. More details are expected at the Q3 earnings call on October 15.

Oura Shelves $2.2B IPO Amid Market Uncertainty

Finnish smart ring maker Oura has indefinitely postponed its Nasdaq IPO just eight days after formally launching the offering. The company had planned to sell 50 million shares at $40-$44 each, implying a valuation of about $15 billion. Rising bond yields and market volatility were cited as reasons.

Oura is profitable, with $60.8 million in net income for the nine months through June 2026 and 5.7 million paid members. Projected revenue growth stands at 90% for fiscal 2026. The withdrawal adds to a growing list of strong companies pulling IPOs due to macro headwinds rather than business fundamentals.

Startups

EliseAI Raises $350M at $4B Valuation

Housing and healthcare AI startup EliseAI has closed a $350 million round co-led by a16z and Bessemer Venture Partners, nearly doubling its valuation from $2.2 billion a year ago. Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, Sapphire Ventures, and Navitas Capital also participated.

EliseAI’s software supports one in six US apartments and has surpassed $200 million in annual recurring revenue. Its recently launched agentic AI assistant Apollo automates more customer operations. The company plans to establish San Francisco as a second engineering hub alongside its New York headquarters.

SiMa.ai Hits $1.45B Valuation With $150M Series C

Physical AI chipmaker SiMa.ai has closed a $150 million Series C co-led by Fidelity and Amplify, reaching a $1.45 billion valuation with $500 million in total funding. Dell Technologies Capital, Maverick Capital, and Point72 were among participants.

The capital will scale Palette Neat, described as the first agentic software environment for Physical AI, and fund next-generation silicon targeting 1,000 dense TOPS for humanoid robots, autonomous vehicles, and drones. Revenue quadrupled between 2024 and 2025.

Restate Lands $20M Series A for Durable AI Agent Infrastructure

Berlin-based Restate has closed a $20 million Series A led by Singular, with participation from Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures. Founded in 2022, the company provides a durable execution engine that ensures multi-step workflows survive crashes and network interruptions.

Rather than building on an external database, Restate developed its own storage, replication, and redundancy layers for a lightweight, high-speed architecture. The company has signed six- and seven-figure contracts with customers including Replit. The fresh capital positions Restate to challenge Temporal, which raised $550 million at a $12.55 billion valuation earlier this month.

Open Source

Cloudflare Open-Sources triagebot-action for AI Issue Triage

Cloudflare has open-sourced triagebot-action, the AI agent pipeline that cut Astro’s GitHub issue backlog from over 200 to under 30. The system runs a four-stage pipeline: reproduce the bug in a sandbox, diagnose the root cause, verify it is a real bug, and attempt a fix. It operates as a GitHub Action with a label-driven state machine.

The tool supports Anthropic, OpenAI, and Cloudflare Workers AI credentials, defaulting to Claude Opus 4.6 for triage. Cloudflare acquired the Astro team in January and developed the system internally. The orchestration model has been split into a separate open-source framework called Flue, making it reusable for other projects.

PostgreSQL 19 Beta 4 Ships, GA Targeted for October

The PostgreSQL Global Development Group released PostgreSQL 19 Beta 4 on September 24. Several features were reverted, including SQL/PGQ graph queries, online checksum switching, and the FOR PORTION OF clause. These may return in a future major release.

The release builds on the asynchronous I/O subsystem introduced in PostgreSQL 18, adds a new REPACK command, and introduces parallel autovacuum workers to reduce maintenance downtime. A release candidate is expected in early October, with GA targeted for late October.

Fortnite Rocket Racing Shuts Down Today

Epic Games is shutting down Rocket Racing within Fortnite on October 1. Low player engagement since its December 2023 launch is the reason. Ballistic and Festival Battle Stage are also being discontinued.

All UEFN community maps built with Rocket Racing templates will be removed, but vehicle customization items remain usable in other Fortnite modes. The content creation tools were integrated into UEFN’s base toolset earlier this year.
