Google Unveils Gemini 4 Carbon, a Cybersecurity-Focused Frontier Model

Google released Gemini 4 Carbon on October 28, a frontier model purpose-built for cybersecurity. It targets vulnerability discovery, exploit generation, and patch creation as a single pipeline.

Vendor-reported benchmarks put it at 88.2% on SEC-bench Pro, 54.8% on ExploitGym, and 71% on CWE-bench. Google claims Carbon generates secure code at more than twice the rate of its predecessor Argon on internal benchmarks. It reportedly ranks first on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index.

Access is restricted at launch. Only vetted cybersecurity defenders can use it through Google’s Fairwind Programme, with a broader rollout to developers and enterprises planned. The release comes just two weeks after Gemini 4 Argon.

Microsoft’s AI School Privacy Standard Takes Effect November 1

Microsoft’s AI Safety and Privacy Standard, developed jointly with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), went live on November 1. School districts can now embed ten contractually enforceable protections into their existing Microsoft agreements.

The core provisions ban using student and educator data for AI model training, prohibit AI-driven advertising, and block AI companion features designed to foster emotional dependency. Microsoft also commits to annual certification and grants districts audit rights.

According to Fortune, districts can add the protections without renegotiating contracts. The standard does not ban AI in classrooms. Instead, it gives schools legally binding control over how AI products handle data. It follows New York City’s year-long AI moratorium in public schools.

Intel Q3 Revenue Hits $16.5B but PC Slowdown Outlook Triggers Chip Selloff

Intel reported Q3 2026 results on October 29. Revenue reached $16.5 billion, up 21% year over year, with GAAP EPS of $0.60. Q4 guidance came in at $15.0 to $16.0 billion.

Shares initially surged as much as 13% in after-hours trading but gave back those gains after the CFO warned that the PC slowdown would persist through the first half of 2027.

The selloff spread across global chip stocks. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped 9.14%, and South Korea’s KOSPI fell 3.48% (206 points) to close at 5,730. The downturn reflects broader market anxiety about the sustainability of AI infrastructure spending.

South Korea’s October Semiconductor Exports Hit $56.4B, Annual $1T Record in Sight

South Korea’s Ministry of Trade reported that October semiconductor exports reached $56.44 billion, a 259.4% increase year over year. Memory chips accounted for 88.8% of total semiconductor exports.

Overall exports topped $110 billion for the second consecutive month, putting the country on track for $1 trillion in annual exports for the first time. AI datacenter demand and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) volume growth are the main drivers.

If Korea crosses the $1 trillion threshold, it will be the seventh country to do so. The government submitted a record 820.9 trillion won budget for 2027, citing the semiconductor boom as its fiscal foundation.

Re:Build Manufacturing Raises $2.1B Led by General Catalyst and JPMorgan

US manufacturing accelerator Re:Build Manufacturing raised $2.1 billion co-led by General Catalyst and JPMorgan’s Strategic Investment Group. The deal was announced on October 27.

Re:Build spun off electric pickup maker Slate Auto three years ago and has since focused on expanding hard-tech manufacturing capacity in the United States. The new capital will fund additional industrial startup launches.

The company’s cumulative funding now exceeds $4 billion. At $2.1 billion in a single round, this ranks among the largest raises ever for a manufacturing-focused startup, reflecting the broader reshoring trend in American industry.

IPercept Closes $16.5M Series A for CNC Predictive Maintenance AI

Stockholm-based IPercept closed a $16.5 million Series A co-led by Isogon Ventures and 2150. Luminar Ventures, RunwayFBU, J12 Ventures, and AI.Fund also participated.

The company’s patented device attaches to the moving side of any CNC machine and delivers component-level health insights. It requires no controller integration or historical data, making it deployable on any machine immediately.

Airbus, Bosch, and Hitachi Energy are already customers. The funding will support IPercept’s first dedicated presence in the United States and expand reseller partnerships with industrial service companies.

COSMIC Epoch 1.11 Ships with Wayland Dialog Protocol and Hybrid GPU Fixes

System76’s Rust-based Linux desktop environment COSMIC released Epoch 1.11, roughly two weeks after version 1.10.

The headline addition is Wayland xdg-dialog-v1 protocol support, which improves how modal dialogs are presented. The app library and pop-launcher now ensure the correct GPU is used on hybrid systems, a key fix for running games on multi-GPU laptops.

Other changes include touchpad tap-and-drag and drag-lock settings, JSON MIME type association in COSMIC Edit, compositor stability fixes, and translation updates.

Arch Linux 2026.10.01 ISO Released with Kernel 7.2.7 and systemd 262

Arch Linux shipped its tenth monthly installation image of the year, version 2026.10.01. It includes Linux kernel 7.2.7 and systemd 262.

The ISO weighs 1.5 GB and comes with ArchInstall 4.5. Compared to September’s ISO, the kernel jumped from 7.2.2 to 7.2.7, incorporating a month of stability patches.

Existing Arch users do not need the ISO. Running pacman -Syu keeps any installation at the same package state. Monthly ISOs are intended for fresh installs only.

Activision Under Fire for Using Real Itaewon Disaster Footage in Modern Warfare 4

A roughly three-second clip in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s opening cinematic has been identified as real news footage from the 2022 Itaewon crowd crush in Seoul, showing a paramedic performing CPR. South Korean players spotted it first.

The Itaewon Disaster Bereaved Families Association demanded the footage be removed. The Korea Game Users Association also called for its replacement and a formal apology. Activision told SBS it had “no intention to treat real-life events lightly” but did not commit to removing the clip.

The consumer advocacy group stressed the dispute should not become censorship of the game as a whole, limiting its request to the one clip.
