Anthropic CEO Calls for Slowing the AI Frontier

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a roughly 3,800-word essay titled “We Must Pace the Frontier” on September 12. His core argument: the AI industry must deliberately slow the rate at which it improves model capabilities. Recursive self-improvement is accelerating progress across the industry, and misaligned agent swarms could cause catastrophic cyber damage within 6 to 12 months.

The industry response was extraordinary. OpenAI’s Sam Altman and xAI’s Elon Musk both expressed agreement within a day. Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said the essay “points towards the right path forward.” A public consensus among rival AI lab leaders on the need to slow down is unprecedented.

Anthropic announced its first concrete step: granting permanent on-site access to third-party evaluators. The goal is to ensure safety verification keeps pace with capability gains.

Microsoft Publishes Draft Code of Conduct for MAI Models

On September 14, Microsoft published a draft Code of Conduct for its MAI model family and opened a six-week public consultation. The 37-page document applies to the in-house models Microsoft has been developing since forming a superintelligence team in late 2025.

The restrictions are specific. MAI models are barred from resisting shutdown, setting their own goals, or hiding their reasoning from human auditors. The code also bans cyberattack assistance, weapons of mass destruction facilitation, and deepfake generation.

CEO Satya Nadella stated that “any pursuit of superintelligence has to be grounded in the core principle that if the AI we build is not helping humanity and under human control, it’s not worth pursuing.” This marks the first time a major tech company has publicly drafted behavioral rules for its AI models and invited outside feedback. The move is also a direct response to Amodei’s pacing essay.

SoftBank Secures $11.87 Billion Loan to Fund OpenAI Investment

SoftBank secured an $11.87 billion two-year loan from about 20 banks to fund its investment in OpenAI. The facility exceeded its original $10 billion target. It is separate from a $10 billion margin loan tied to SoftBank’s OpenAI stake.

Led by Masayoshi Son, SoftBank is on track to invest nearly $65 billion in OpenAI by October. The company has already raised around $37 billion this year through bond sales and loans. The scale and speed of SoftBank’s AI bet have few precedents in corporate history.

South Korea Chip Exports Surge 270% in Early September

South Korea’s semiconductor exports jumped 270.1% year-on-year to $16.48 billion in the first ten days of September. Chips accounted for 47.1% of all outbound shipments during the period, the largest share any single product category has ever held.

Cumulative semiconductor exports for January through August reached $281 billion, up 169.6% from a year earlier. South Korea’s total exports have hit $709.4 billion so far this year, already surpassing last year’s full-year record. Demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips powering AI data centers is the primary growth driver.

Apple Launches iOS 27 with Gemini-Powered Siri AI

Apple released iOS 27 on September 14, introducing a Google Gemini-powered overhaul of Siri. The update, which shipped alongside iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Duo, delivers 20-plus turn conversational dialogues, multi-app automation, and on-screen awareness.

On-device AI processing requires an A17 Pro chip or newer. Older devices fall back to cloud-based processing for basic conversational queries. Apple’s multi-year deal with Google is reportedly worth around $1 billion per year. After years of trailing competitors, Siri has made a serious leap into the generative AI era.

Tandem Health Raises $100M Series B for European AI Healthcare

Stockholm-based Tandem Health closed a $100 million Series B led by the Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT. Existing investors Kinnevik, Northzone, Amino Collective, and Visionaries also participated. Total funding now stands at $160 million.

The company operates an AI-powered clinical documentation and decision support system used by 10,000 healthcare organizations across 14 European markets. It covers the full clinical workflow: patient summary preparation before appointments, documentation during consultations, and coding afterward. This is the Scaleup Europe Fund’s first healthcare investment.

Qupital Closes $300M Series C, Eyes IPO

Hong Kong fintech Qupital secured $300 million in Series C funding and MUFG ABS financing, led by M Capital. The company provides AI-driven trade finance to sellers on major e-commerce platforms including Amazon, JD.com, TikTok Shop, and Pinduoduo.

Cumulative loans processed have surpassed $9.5 billion. The new capital will fund expansion into China, the US, Japan, and Southeast Asia as the company prepares for an initial public offering. Qupital credits its proprietary AI risk engine’s strong credit performance as a key factor in the raise.

Omarchy 4.0: DHH’s Linux Dev Environment Passes 32K GitHub Stars

Omarchy, the Arch Linux-based developer environment created by Ruby on Rails author DHH (David Heinemeier Hansson), shipped version 4.0. The project has crossed 32,000 GitHub stars, making it the most-watched developer environment of 2026. The release replaces several desktop components with a unified shell built on Quickshell.

In August 2026, Hansson incorporated the nonprofit Omacom Foundation. Commitments from 1Password and 37signals, each pledging $300,000 over three years, brought total project funding to $12.6 million. The concept of a preconfigured, developer-first Linux environment has clearly struck a chord.

KDE Plasma 6.8 Beta Ships Ahead of 30th Anniversary

The KDE project released Plasma 6.8 beta on September 10. New features include Windows-style Autoscroll, Union theme system support for QtWidgets applications, and reduced vRAM usage for the Breeze theme.

The stable release is scheduled for October 14, which also marks the KDE project’s 30th anniversary. A new Kup backup scheduler module has been added, and over 137 contributors participated in this release cycle.

Marvel’s Wolverine Launches Today as PS5 Exclusive

Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Wolverine releases on PS5 on September 15. Unlike the studio’s Spider-Man series, this is a linear, mature-rated action game with roughly 15 hours of gameplay. Standard edition costs $69.99 and Digital Deluxe $79.99.

Reviews have been mixed. The game sits at 78 on Metacritic and 79 on OpenCritic. Critics praised Logan’s characterization and the combat system but noted repetitive encounters in the back half.

Tokyo Game Show 2026 Opens September 17 at Record Scale

TGS 2026 runs September 17-21 at Makuhari Messe. To mark the show’s 30th anniversary, CESA has extended it to five days for the first time. The event expects 3,500 booths and 300,000 visitors.

Capcom will broadcast a 40-minute Capcom Spotlight on September 16 before showcasing Monster Hunter Wilds expansion, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and Pragmata on the show floor. Square Enix is bringing Kingdom Hearts 4 and Final Fantasy VII Rebellion. Xbox and KOEI TECMO have also announced substantial lineups.

Silent Hill: Townfall Set for September 24 PS5 Release

Silent Hill: Townfall, developed by Screen Burn and published by Annapurna Interactive and Konami, launches September 24. The first-person horror game is set in the fictional Scottish town of St. Amelia in 1996.

A standout mechanic involves a handheld TV called the CRTV that detects invisible threats and reveals hidden signals. The Digital Deluxe Edition includes early access starting September 22. This marks the third consecutive annual Silent Hill release, following Silent Hill 2 (2024) and Silent Hill f (2025).
